Een moeder die op sterven ligt laat haar zoon Jack (Nicolas Cage) beloven nooit te zullen trouwen. Deze belofte zorgt voor een psychische blokkade waardoor Jack zich niet wil binden aan zijn verloofde Betsy (Sarah Jessica Parker). Op een gegeven moment besluiten ze toch de knoop door te hakken en gaan naar Las Vegas om te trouwen. Daar doet Jack z'n best om het huwelijk op alle mogelijke manieren uit te stellen. Hij raakt verzeild in een spelletje poker waar hij $65.000 verliest aan beroepsgokker Tommy Korman (James Caan). Deze is bereid de schuld kwijt te schelden als hij één weekend mag doorbrengen met zijn verloofde.
