Gebaseerd op het leven van de iconische acteur Jimmy Stewart. Van het winnen van de Oscar voor Beste Acteur in The Philadelphia Story tot zijn aanmelding bij en benoeming tot gevechtspiloot en commandant in het Amerikaanse leger aan het begin van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Stewart vloog 20 missies boven Europa en klom op tot de rang van kolonel, om vervolgens gebroken en ontmoedigd naar huis terug te keren. En toen kwam George Bailey op bezoek.
