John Halder is een goede, fatsoenlijke Duitser die verkeerde beslissingen neemt wanneer de nazi's de macht grijpen. Over zijn zieke moeder heeft Halder een boek geschreven, waarin hij een pleidooi houdt voor euthanasie. Tot zijn verrassing wordt het boek een succes binnen de hoogste regionen van de nazipartij, die Halders ideeën willen misbruiken voor hun gruwelijke plannen. Blind voor de werkelijke bedoelingen van de nazi's, ziet Halder alleen zijn professionele succes. Hij wordt zelfs lid van de SS, zonder zich te bekommeren om het lot van de mensen om hem heen. Zoals zijn Joodse vriend Maurice, die dringend zijn hulp nodig heeft om Duitsland te ontvluchten. Helpt Halder zijn vriend of is hij een willoze pion geworden.
