Aan het eind van de jaren veertig vindt in Libanon een verwoestend conflict plaats. De katholieke zus en broer Emilie en Emir besluiten naar Brazilië te vertrekken. Aan boord van het schip naar hun nieuwe thuis wordt Emilie verliefd op Omar, een islamitische handelaar. Voor een woedende en jaloerse Emir is de relatie onverdraaglijk. Het verhaal ontvouwt zich tegen de achtergrond van het majestueuze regenwoud, en de acties van Emir en het daaropvolgende besluit van Emilie leiden tot rampzalige gevolgen.
