Brennan Huff (Will Ferrell) en Dale Doback (John C. Reilly), twee verwende volwassen mannen, wonen ieder nog bij hun alleenstaande ouders. Brennan bij zijn moeder en Dale bij zijn vader. Dit makkelijke leventje bevalt hen goed en beide maken geen aanstalten om uit huis te gaan. Er komt echter een kink in de kabel als de moeder van de ene man verliefd wordt op de vader van de andere en ze besluiten te trouwen. De twee mannen worden op deze manier stiefbroers.
