In het jaar 1979 in New Jersey draagt de veertienjarige Olmo de zorg voor zijn bedlegerige vader. Deze lijdt aan multiple sclerose. Wanneer hun buurvrouw Nina de jongen op haar feest uitnodigt komt zijn leven op zijn kop te staan.
