De film vertelt het verhaal van de Britse filosofe en schrijfster Iris Murdoch. Als jonge professor aan Oxford krijgt ze een relatie met professor John Bayley. Bayley vertelt hoe hij Iris 40 jaar geleden ontmoette, hoe hun leven er uit zag, en welke verwoestende effecten de ziekte van Alzheimer op haar hadden.
