De binnenkort te trouwen afgestudeerde student Finn Dodd krijgt koudwatervrees als ze vermoedt dat haar verloofde haar bedriegt. Om haar hoofd leeg te maken, bezoekt Finn haar grootmoeder, Hy, en oudtante, Glady Joe Cleary, in Grasse, Californië. Daar leert Finn dat Hy en Glady Joe lid zijn van een groep gepassioneerde quilters, en in de loop van haar bezoek wordt ze getrakteerd op verhalen over liefde en leven door vrouwen die rijke ervaringen en veel wijsheid hebben verzameld.
