Het is 1993 en terwijl het land reikhalzend uitkijkt naar het historische bezoek van Boris Jeltsin aan India, werft het Indiase inlichtingenbureau een bescheiden tolk gebarentaal en onderwijzeres aan om Ashok te ondervragen, een doofstomme ober die in hechtenis zit wegens een vermeend complot om Russische president te vermoorden.Wat zich in de loop van de beladen procedure ontwikkelt, is een fragiele band tussen twee geïsoleerde mannen die schommelt tussen nieuwsgierigheid, wantrouwen en een primair begrip.
