De jonge, mysterieuze Katie arriveert in het kleine dorpje Southport in North Carolina. Haar plotse komst roept bij de hechte community vragen op over haar verleden. Katie lijkt vastbesloten om te voorkomen een persoonlijke band op te bouwen, totdat een reeks gebeurtenissen er voor zorgt dat ze in twee relaties getrokken wordt: een met Alex, een weduwnaar en winkeleigenaar met twee jonge kinderen, en met haar alleenstaande buurvrouw Jo.
