'Hemingway & Gellhorn' vertelt het verhaal van het meest bekende literaire Amerikaanse koppel ooit. Het begint in 1936 wanneer het paar elkaar ontmoet in een bar in Florida. Ernest Hemingway (Clive Owen) is een beroemde schrijver en Martha Gellhorn (Nicole Kidman) is een van de grootste oorlogscorrespondenten van de 20e eeuw. In hun 5-jarige huwelijk reizen ze eerst naar Spanje om de verslaglegging van de Spaanse Burgeroorlog tussen 1936 en 1939 te doen. Gellhorn was de enige vrouw ooit die Hemmingway om een scheiding heeft gevraagd en ze inspireerde hem om zijn meeste beroemde roman te schrijven, 'For Whom the Bell Tolls'.
