Antoine Moreau, een bekende Franse pantomimespeler, wordt in 1944 door de Duitsers gedwongen op te treden in de 'vrijstaat' Terezin, het Tsjechische Theresienstad dat Hitler aan de joden 'geschonken' heeft. Hij moet nog een keer voor de kinderen die daar leven optreden, krijgt voor zijn werk betaald en kan daarna weer probleemloos naar Parijs terugkeren. Althans, dat beweren de Duitsers. Wat ze verzwijgen, is dat het eigenlijk een grote uitgekiende propaganda-actie is om de daadwerkelijke toestanden in Theresienstad te verhullen en daarmee het internationale Rode Kruis om de tuin te leiden.
