In dit biografische verhaal over de Japanse schrijver Kenji Miyazawa wordt zijn jeugd geschetst. Hij heeft een moeizame relatie met zijn vader Masajiro die een pandjeshuis heeft en opvolging wil. Kenji zoekt een andere weg in het leven met religie en literatuur. Het gezin krijgt het ook zwaar te verduren door tuberculose.
