Op het dorpsplein begint een plattelandsfestival en de dansende dorpelingen zingen een lied. De mooie Marenka Krusinová is verdrietig, want haar ouders hebben de huwelijksmakelaar en een bruidegom met zijn ouders uitgenodigd. Maar het meisje is verliefd op Jeník, aan wie ze trouwe liefde betuigt. De huwelijksmakelaar Kecal stelt Vasek Mícha voor als bruidegom. Marenka weigert echter de nieuwe vrijer en wanneer ze de verklede maar nogal domme Vasek ontmoet, laat ze hem geloven dat zijn toekomstige bruid hem gaat vergiftigen.
