Cree-matriarch Aline Spears overleeft een kindertijd in het Canadese residentiële schoolsysteem om de generatiestrijd van haar familie voort te zetten in het licht van systemische hongersnood, racisme en seksueel misbruik. Ze gebruikt haar griezelige vermogen om codes te begrijpen en te vertalen door voor een speciale divisie van de Canadese luchtmacht te werken als Cree-codespreker in de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
