In 1969 droomt de jonge Jud Crandall ervan om zijn geboortestad Ludlow, Maine achter zich te laten. Hij ontdekt echter sinistere geheimen en wordt gedwongen om de confrontatie aan te gaan met een duistere familiegeschiedenis die hem voor altijd met Ludlow verbonden zal houden. Samen met zijn jeugdvrienden moet Jud vechten tegen een oud kwaad dat Ludlow al sinds de oprichting in zijn greep houdt en dat, eenmaal opgegraven, alles op zijn pad kan vernietigen.
