The Donut King vertelt het verhaal van Ted Ngoy, ook wel bekend als Uncle Ted, een Cambodjaans-Amerikaanse ondernemer en voormalig eigenaar van een keten van succesvolle donutwinkels. Deze documentaire schijnt een licht op de Cambodjaanse vluchtelingen in Californië en hoe liefde, verlossing en het lot deze mensen samen heeft gebracht.
