Regisseur James Marsh vertelt in deze documentaire het verhaal van de chimpansee Nim. In 1974 wordt Nim, twee weken oud, opgenomen in een soort van hippie-achtige gemeenschap van onderzoekers en docenten die enthousiast aan het werk gaan met Nim Chimpsky. Hij wordt opgevoed als ware het een kind. Deze documentaire begint bij het idee van psycholoog Herb Terrace om de cognitieve eigenschappen van een chimpansee te onderzoeken. Om uit te vinden wat een chimpansee zou kunnen denken, is het experiment ontstaan om een chimpansee taal te leren gebruiken.
Nee, helaas is Project Nim nog niet beschikbaar op Netflix in Nederland.
