In het noorden van Yucatan (Mexico) wonen mensen in de buurt van 'cenotes'. Deze natuurlijke zinkgaten, ontstaan door instortende grotten, vormden de enige waterbronnen voor Maya's die niet in de buurt van een rivier of meer woonden. Sommige 'cenotes' werden gebruikt als plek voor rituele offers.
