Op 9 augustus 1988 werd de NHL voor altijd veranderd door één pennenstreek. De Edmonton Oilers, die net hun vierde Stanley Cup-overwinning in vijf jaar tijd hadden geboekt, tekenden een deal die Wayne Gretzky, een Canadese nationale held en de beste ijshockeyspeler ooit, naar de Los Angeles Kings stuurde met een contract van miljoenen dollar. De verbijsterde Oilers-fans worstelden om het ondenkbare te begrijpen en fans in Los Angeles haastten zich om seizoenkaarten te kopen. Filmmaker Peter Berg toont in deze documentaire het opvallende verhaal van de overdracht die het hele land in shock bracht en een stad onafhankelijk maakte door een 27-jarige jongen.
