Jarenlang was Adam Goodes een nationale sportheld in Australië. Tot tweemaal toe ontving hij de Brownlow Medal, de jaarlijkse prijs voor de fairste en beste speler van het Australische football. Sinds een dertienjarig meisje hem vanaf de tribune voor “aap” had uitgescholden en hij haar uit het stadion had laten verwijderen, nam de populariteit van deze zoon van een Aborigine moeder en Iers-Schotse vader razendsnel af. Nadat hij in 2014 werd uitgeroepen tot “Australian of the Year”, nam de weerzin tegen de briljante speler verder toe.
