De geschiedenis van nonnen weerspiegelt de geschiedenis van alle vrouwen – in wat ons over het verleden wordt geleerd, zijn vrouwen bijna onzichtbaar. Hoewel er vandaag de dag één miljoen nonnen meer zijn dan de priesters, moeten ze moeite hebben om gehoord te worden door de volledig mannelijke rooms-katholieke hiërarchie waarvan ze uitgesloten zijn. Behind the Veil: Nuns is de eerste film ooit die vanuit een mondiaal perspectief de turbulente geschiedenis en opmerkelijke prestaties van vrouwen in de religie vastlegt, van voorchristelijke Keltische gemeenschappen tot de radicale zusters van de jaren tachtig. Hedendaagse nonnen met kracht, waardigheid en toewijding spreken over hun leven en over hun voorgangers.
