20 miljoen jaar geleden domineerden dinosaurussen de aarde. Een andere groep reptielen stond echter ook op het punt een buitengewone sprong te maken: de pterosauriërs werden heer en meester in de lucht. Het verhaal van hoe en waarom deze mysterieuze wezens het luchtruim kozen, is fenomenaal en bovendien een van de grootste mysteries in de paleontologie. Want, waarom tart een wezen zo groot als een giraf de zwaartekracht om hoog in de prehistorische lucht te kunnen zweven? In de film Flying Monsters probeert de wereldberoemde natuurkundige sir David Attenborough de waarheid te onthullen over deze raadselachtige pterosauriërs. Gedreven door de informatie die hij vindt, begint Attenborough een van de oudste wetenschappelijke mysteries te ontrafelen.
