Synthwave grijpt niet alleen terug op de synthpop van de jaren tachtig, maar ook op de glossy visuele stijl uit die periode. De (soundtracks van) films, tv-series en computergames van destijds, zoals Miami Vice, Lethal Weapon en Top Gun, vormen een grote inspiratiebron voor veel synthwave-muzikanten. Regisseur John Carpenter is een van de helden van de synthwave, vooral vanwege de vaak unheimische soundtracks die hij voor zijn eigen films maakte – uiteraard gespeeld op synthesizers.
Nee, helaas is The Rise of the Synths nog niet beschikbaar op Netflix in Nederland.
