Zomer 1977: De Amerikaanse media-ondernemer Steve Ross besluit de exotische voetbalsport in zijn land te vestigen. Met spectaculaire spelers aankopen en slimme marketing weet hij New York Cosmos binnen enkele jaren uit te bouwen tot hét hippe sportadres in de USA. Vooral het sportieve succes na de ondertekening van supersterren Pelé en Beckenbauer trekt zoveel beroemdheden uit sport en entertainment aan dat het Giants Stadium, waar Cosmos zijn thuiswedstrijden speelt, binnenkort kan concurreren met de legendarische 'Studio 54'. Het is niet voor niets dat Franz Beckenbauer zijn jaren bij de New York Cosmos nog steeds omschrijft als 'de beste tijd van zijn leven'.
