Het verhaal van Amerikaanse ambassadeur in China, Jon Huntsman, wordt verweven met dat van zijn geadopteerde Chinese dochter Gracie Mei en dat van de blinde mensenrechtenactivist Chen Guangcheng. Huntsman heeft geen gemakkelijke baan met twee grootmachten die wedijveren in economische groei en staatsveiligheid. Tiener Gracie Mei zoekt haar eigen identiteit. Chen Guangcheng wordt gevolgd van zijn huisarrest tot en met zijn breed uitgemeten politieke asiel in de Amerikaanse ambassade.
