Charles Dexter Ward is een magiër die een vloek plaatst op de dorpsbewoners die hem op de brandstapel willen gooien. Na zijn dood is het honderd jaar rustig in het dorp, tot een nabestaande van Ward besluit het werk van zijn overgrootvader af te maken.
