'De Indiaan in het kind doden': dat was ruim 130 jaar de missie van tientallen door de overheid gefinancierde en door de kerk gerunde kostscholen in Canada. De gedachte was van een naïeve eenvoud: plaats kinderen op jonge leeftijd uit huis, zorg dat ze Frans en Engels leren en God omarmen en voor je het weet zijn ze geïntegreerd in de Canadese maatschappij. Dat deze mensonterende missie een verwoestende impact heeft gehad op tienduizenden kinderen en hun families, wordt duidelijk aan de hand van de verhalen van de inmiddels volwassen Lyna Hart en Glen Anaquod.
Nee, helaas is We Were Children nog niet beschikbaar op Netflix in Nederland.
