Viktor, die zijn gehoor op vijfjarige leeftijd verloor, woont samen met zijn moeder in Kharkiv. Als getalenteerd fotograaf legt hij de wereld om hem heen vast in opvallende zwart-witbeelden, sterk beïnvloed door de leer van zijn overleden vader over “de militaire geest” en Miyamoto Musashi’s The Strategy of the Samurai. Ondanks dat zijn beperking hem ervan weerhoudt werk te vinden, leidt Viktors sterke plichtsgevoel hem ertoe zich vrijwillig aan te melden bij het lokale leger als fotograaf wanneer de oorlog uitbreekt. In deze rol legt hij de rauwe menselijkheid vast van zowel burgers als soldaten die verstrikt zijn in het conflict, en biedt hij een unieke en aangrijpende kijk op de verwoesting.
