Lang voordat Naomi Campbell de catwalk opliep, was Bethann Hardison een beroemd fotomodel dat vocht voor meer diversiteit in de modewereld. Ze schakelde al snel over op een loopbaan achter de schermen, waar ze aan de slag ging als redacteur van de Italiaanse Vogue, als producent van tv-programma’s en als oprichter van haar eigen modellenbureau – als eerste zwarte vrouw. Hardison doet alles op haar eigen voorwaarden en ook deze documentaire over haar leven, waarin ze de balans opmaakt van haar eigen nalatenschap, heeft ze mede-geregisseerd. Co-regisseur Frédéric Tcheng maakte eerder naam met films over modeontwerpers, zoals Dior and I (2014). Samen geven ze een overzicht van Hardisons carrière, een blik in de modewereld zelf en hoe die twee elkaar beïnvloeden. Dat alles geïllustreerd met archiefmateriaal, swingende muziek van vroeger en het commentaar van Hardison, die nog even stoer is als toen.
