De voormalige Franse koloniën in Centraal- en West-Afrika zijn sinds 1960 onafhankelijk, maar de meeste van deze landen gebruiken nog steeds de munteenheid van de voormalige onderdrukker: de CFA-frank. Toen het werd geïntroduceerd, was het gekoppeld aan de Franse frank, zodat de nationale bank in Parijs het monetaire beleid controleerde. Nu heeft de munt een vaste wisselkoers ten opzichte van de euro. De koppeling met de Europese munt heeft een sterke invloed op het monetaire beleid van CFA-landen. En dat betekent dat de waarde van de CFA-frank wordt bepaald door politieke beslissingen die elders worden genomen, en niet door de binnenlandse economie.
