Brenda's eerste herinneringen waren aan het opgroeien in een liefdevol blank pleeggezin, voordat ze plotseling werd weggehaald en terugkeerde naar haar Aboriginal-familie. Tientallen jaren later voelt ze zich niet verbonden met beide helften van haar leven, dus gaat ze op zoek naar het pleeggezin met wie ze het contact had verloren. Onderweg ontdekt ze lang begraven geheimen, leugens van de overheid en de mogelijkheid van diepere connecties met familie en cultuur.
